Thinking about just VO2max in your athlete testing? 🤔 This video dives into why understanding lactate alongside VO2 provides a more complete picture. See why exercise science and a deeper dive into physiology can give you better performance testing insights when evaluating an athlete's metabolism and overall sports science.

We’ll break down exactly how VO2 and lactate data work together to reveal aerobic vs. glycolytic contribution, how much carbohydrate an athlete burns at each intensity, and where their true maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) sits — without guessing and without changing your workflow.

What you’ll get from combining VO2 and lactate:

  • True FatMax / fat oxidation rates, not just estimates
  • Carbohydrate combustion rate at each intensity (fueling planning, pacing, weight loss guidance)
  • MLSS based on physiology, not a guess
  • Zone 2, threshold, FatMax, etc. as individualized training zones
  • A complete metabolic profile from the same workflow you’re already running

Use this to increase the value of your testing service, give clients answers they actually care about (fueling, fat burning, sustainable pace), and position yourself as someone who delivers a complete metabolic assessment — not just a VO2 number.

You're doing testing with a V2 analyzer, maybe with a full metabolic cart, measuring V2 max, ventilation, ventilatory thresholds, and you use that to advise clients, athletes, patients, but you do feel that you maybe miss something in the whole picture. Maybe you feel like V2 alone isn't providing all the information you would like to use in advising your clients for better training, for better health, better longevity, then maybe we got something for you. Because this video is about showing you how adding one simple metric to your existing protocol, to your existing setup, can transform your whole performance assessment.

So that metric here is adding lactate testing to your current protocol. The lactate concentration that you measure is a result of two things. It is the lactate production and the lactate combustion.

Because lactate is not a waste product. It is actually produced all the time continuously. Lactate is produced in the glycolysis and is combusted in the aerobic metabolism.

It is actually one of the best most efficient fastest available fuels for the aerobic metabolism. Why adding lactate concentration measurements to your testing unlocks so many interesting things is because the lactate combustion is actually proportional to the oxygen uptake that you measured. So when we measure combustion by measuring V2 and you now measure concentration we can solve for production.

By knowing lactate production rate you know ATP production in the glycolysis. And lactate is only produced out of glucose or glycogen which means if you know your lactate production rate you also know your carbohydrate combustion rate. And now it gets interesting right because now you have something you might be interested in.

How much carbohydrate is somebody burning? And when you know the total power output and you understand how much of this power comes from carbohydrates the remaining is coming from fat. So by knowing production rate you know carbohydrate combustion rate and therefore you know fat combustion rate which now enables you to get fat combustion rates maximum fat oxidation rate and fat max.

And the last bit most popular metric in endurance sports is obviously MLSS maximal lactate steady state which is the highest equilibrium of lactate production and lactate combustion. So from just V2 testing you get to a whole complete holistic view on the physiology of your subjects and clients and athletes by just adding lactate.
