Sports performance testing can be more than a one-off assessment — it can be your human performance lab playbook to increase client retention and convert tests into long-term coaching. Grab the free handout with the exact workflow and scripts.

This step-by-step video shows the proven process used by hundreds of labs and coaches to integrate testing into a coaching business:

Step 1 — Communication that sells outcomes (not metrics): Lead with athlete goals and value; use metrics (VO2max, lactate threshold, FatMax, LT1, VLamax, running economy) as support, not the headline.

Step 2 — Booking made effortless: Raise perceived value (what’s included, report preview) and lower friction (rescheduling/refunds, Stripe/PayPal, trust proof, real testimonials, address, photo, short 10-min “is testing right for me?” call via Calendly).

Step 3 — Testing done right (30–50 min door-to-door): Clear procedure, timing, tools (ergometer/treadmill, lactate threshold test, analyzers), and costs (e.g., strips/consumables).

Step 4 — Consultancy that converts: In 3–5 minutes, generate the metabolic profile and report. Walk the athlete through only the 2–3 metrics that matter to their goal, then use performance projection to show the target changes (e.g., VO2max/lactate) required to hit their time/power. Close with retest scheduling and a coaching offer (e.g., credit today’s test toward first month).

Are you thinking about to start a business in physiological testing and performance testing for athletes, but you don't know yet exactly where to start or what the exact workflow is going to be, then we got something for you. Or if you do that already, if you do physiological testing, but you're not 100% sure you have the best workflow and all the business aspects figured out, then this video might also be for you. Or if you are doing coaching, if your primarily business is coaching and you have two demands maybe increasing customer retention because truth be told customer retention and coaching that is one of a tough nut to crack, right?

People might leave a coach during the winter times. Acquiring more athletes is difficult, cost time and likely not the most liked things that you want to do, then we also have something for you. So what I'm going to talk about here is a handout with the best workflow how to integrate testing into your business.

This workflow has been modified and fine-tuned for more than a decade and is used by hundreds of human performance labs and coaches across the globe. Step one is about communication. One of the most common issues is to think about the testing starts with the test itself.

The onboarding of your customer actually starts in your first communication on social media, on your website, on emails you send out. This is where the first point of contact happens. This is where the onboarding starts.

And one of the most common issues that we do see is that people talk too much about the test and too much about the metrics. This message is all about your athlete. It's all about what the athlete gets from such an assessment.

Step two is booking an appointment with you. In a perfect scenario, this would be no touch from you with a link to your calendar to book an assessment, slide the credit card, pay up front, all is done. Step three, the testing itself.

The net testing time is about 30 minutes. At welcoming the athlete a little bit of small talk changing for the athlete and showering afterwards you will end up with like 45 to 50 minutes for the testing part. And finally step four, which is the consultancy part.

The part where you hand out the report, you show the data, you explain the data to your athlete. And this is where you really can make the wins. You can take the existing assessment and make a copy of that and modify that copy to show the athlete in real time how changing specific metrics enables the athlete to reach their performance goal.

This opens the door for retesting and for making an appointment. This is basically the athlete asking the trusted advisor how to achieve their goals, which is basically a training program. This is how hundreds of coaches and labs increase customer retention and get in new customers.

Every metric that matters

One assessment. The complete picture of your athlete’s physiology.

VO₂max, VLamax, FatMax, thresholds, fuel use and training zones, from a single test in the lab, in the field or fully remote.
